Japan Rental Car Return Checklist
Most return-day problems are about fuel, time and forgotten items. Go through this list the night before or an hour or two before returning.
Before you return
- Full tank (満タン返し): fill up at a station near the return office and keep the receipt — some companies check it.
- Return time: being late can cost extra. Call ahead if you’ll be late.
- ETC card: leave the rental ETC card with the car. Expressway tolls are settled at return.
- Belongings: trunk, glove box, under the seats, door pockets, chargers, sunglasses.
- Return rented items such as child seats.
- Damage: photos of all sides of the car at pickup and return help.
- If you got a parking ticket or had an accident, tell the staff at return — don’t hide it.
Can’t refuel to full?
If you return without a full tank, the company charges a fuel fee based on distance driven or the missing amount. It is usually higher than the pump price, so refueling nearby is generally cheaper.
Returning for a flight
Many airports have return offices nearby with a shuttle bus to the terminal. Allow for refueling, the return check, waiting for the shuttle and the ride — returning about 3 hours before departure is a safe guide. Leave extra time where city traffic is heavy, such as around Naha Airport.
