Okinawa Rental Car Driving Tips (Bus Lanes, Traffic, Fuel)

Okinawa is one of Japan’s most popular rental car destinations. The roads are easy, but knowing about bus lanes and traffic around Naha makes it much smoother.

Bus lanes (most important)

Bus-only lanes operate on weekday rush hours on roads such as Route 58 between Naha and Ginowan. On Route 58 they run weekdays 7:30–9:00 and 17:30–19:00; ordinary cars may not drive in the bus lane during those times (with exceptions such as turning).

Sections and hours can change — always check the road signs (バス専用 + hours). Other roads have bus lanes too.

Traffic and timing

  • Central Naha, Route 58 and the airport area get congested at rush hour and on weekends.
  • For north–south trips the Okinawa Expressway (Naha–Nago, toll, ETC accepted) is faster. There is no foreigner expressway pass in Okinawa.
  • On return day, leave plenty of time to reach the airport.

The north (Yanbaru) and remote areas

  • Gas stations are scarce in the north — fill up around Nago.
  • Wildlife, including the endangered Okinawa rail (Yanbaru kuina), crosses roads in Yanbaru. Slow down, especially where signs warn.
  • Many beach parking lots charge a fee.

Good to know

  • Plates with わ or れ are rental cars — many drivers around you are tourists too.
  • Plates with Y belong to US military personnel.
  • Sudden squalls and typhoons are common. Change plans when a typhoon is forecast.
